Your Kid's Oral Health

Are you taking care of your kid's oral health?

Let me start with some statistics. According to American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, by the Age of 3, 10% of US Children have oral health issues. By the time they enter Kindergarten, 40% would have had carries. And by the age of 5, this number rises to 60%. These are shocking numbers, particularly, when we know that these oral health problems can be easily avoided.


Oral hygiene is an important part of your child's overall health. The care of their teeth and gums begins with you. You need to set then on the right path for a life time of excellent oral hygiene. Here are a few tips for parents.

ORAL HYGIENE FOR INFANTS: The oral hygiene of your child begin the day he/she is born. Oral hygiene does no mean taking care of the teeth. It is taking care of the whole mouth, the teeth, the gums and the tongue. Wipe your baby's gums with a soft washcloth after feeding. Once teeth begin to erupt, brush the teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Take the bottle away, after your child has finished drinking. Schedule the first appointment with the dentist as soon as the teeth erupt.


ORAL HYGIENE FOR CHILDREN: Be sure your child brushes at least twice a day. Use floride toothpaste and make sure your child spits it out after brushing. As soon as the gap between the teeth closes, teach your kid how to use floss to clean the surface between two teeth. You will need to help your child floss and pay attention to back teeth. Visit the dentist every 6 months.

Remember, prevention is better than cure. Your dentist can keep an eye over all oral health problems that may arise in future. And by catching the problem before it becomes a serious issue can save your little one pain later and you a lot of dollars.
